January often feels like a time of beginnings, resolutions, and the promise of a new year. The season itself speaks a quiet wisdom to us. Nature, in its dormancy, invites us to rest, reflect, and prepare for renewal. Snow blankets the earth, muffling noise and offering stillness. The bare branches of trees remind us of resilience and the beauty of simplicity, while the crisp air clears the mind and invigorates the spirit.

Yet, I have to confess: I haven’t set any New Year’s resolutions this year. Having worked in schools for many years, I’ve always felt that the true "new year" began in September when the school year started. That’s when my energy, ideas, and plans were fully in motion.

But this year, something shifted. At a New Year’s party hosted by a dear friend, I found myself part of a beautiful conversation. My friend and her close circle reflected on their resolutions from last year and shared what they were considering for this year. Each of them had unique goals, but they all emphasized one key ingredient that had kept them on track: accountability through shared commitment.

The Power of Shared Commitment

One friend explained how she shared her goals with someone she trusted, and they supported each other throughout the year. That simple act of sharing not only kept her accountable but also added a layer of connection and encouragement to her journey.

Not long after the party, that same friend called me. She asked if I’d like to join her for a morning walk. I agreed, even though it was earlier than I’d typically motivate myself to head out. And what a rewarding decision that turned out to be.

The morning was magical: crisp air, fresh snow blanketing the ground, and the peaceful quiet that only early hours can bring. Walking alongside a great friend, I felt energized and inspired. That walk set the tone for my entire day. I was awake, focused, productive, and in a fantastic mood. It was a reminder of how small changes—like stepping outside into nature with intention—can ripple out into larger benefits.

This isn’t the first time I’ve experienced the profound benefits of being in nature and connecting with others in outdoor settings. Research has shown that spending time in nature reduces stress, boosts mood, and enhances overall well-being. Walking in natural environments can improve attention, increase creativity, and foster a sense of connection—both to the world around us and to each other.

Why SMART Goals Work Better with Friends

Of course, we’ve all heard about setting SMART goals: Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound. SMART goals provide a clear roadmap, making it easier to stay focused and track progress. But pairing SMART goals with accountability and connection can make them even more powerful.

When we share these experiences with someone else, the impact often deepens. Conversations flow differently outdoors, influenced by the rhythm of walking and the openness of the surroundings. These shared moments create opportunities for connection that feel authentic and grounding.

Embrace January’s Wisdom and Step Into Nature

As we move through January and into the year ahead, I encourage you to consider two things: setting goals that are not only SMART but also supported by someone you trust, and spending intentional time in nature. Whether it’s a quiet walk, a hike, or simply sitting outside, nature has a way of refreshing our minds and spirits.

Take a friend along or invite someone to join you. Share your goals, your thoughts, or even just the silence. You might be surprised at how these simple acts can transform your day—and your year.

If you’re looking for an opportunity to connect with nature in a deeper way, consider joining a forest bathing walk in your community. Forest bathing, or "Shinrin-yoku," is a practice that originated in Japan and involves immersing yourself in the sights, sounds, and sensations of the forest. It’s a mindful and restorative experience that fosters a deep connection with nature, reduces stress, and enhances well-being. Many communities offer guided walks where you can experience the serenity and healing power of the natural world.

Take this season of stillness and reflection to embrace the wisdom January and nature offer. Step outside, connect with your surroundings, and let the new year unfold with clarity and purpose.
